The Light Between Oceans – Book Review

“Award Winning” didn’t do it for me… “It’s going to be made in to a movie” didn’t either, what did was “It’s a story about a Lighthouse Keeper”.

I’ve loved lighthouses since I was a child, and it’s a secret wish to one day be able to spend time living in one, so I jumped at the chance to read it, if only to keep my wild imaginings at bay.

What a gorgeous story. Bittersweet and at times simply heartbreaking The Light Between Oceans tells the story of Tom Sherbourne and his wife Isabel on the tiny island of Janus Rock; their day to day life, and the moment that everything turns around. A boat washes ashore with a dead man on board, and a tiny baby girl. Instead of reporting it Tom is persuaded by Isabel to keep the baby as their own. What follows is a tragic tale of action and consequences. It’s poetic in the descriptions of the untamed Western Australian Coast and poignant in the struggles  people faced on the periphery and in the centre of what seemed a simple gift from the sea.

There has been some criticism of it for various reason, but judge for yourself. I found it to be a good book, one to be read and simply enjoyed.
